STAAR 1.0

Week Nine

Well, folks, it's that time of year again! STAAR has come and it's time for those annoying tests. While you're rolling your eyes about the ridiculous care you have to take with your test document and booklet, actually answering the questions is no laughing matter... especially when it comes to the essay portion. Here are some easy ways to stay sane during the STAAR test.

  1. Plan out your time beforehand. You get 4 hours on the test; you want to use them wisely. Plan to do about 8-10 questions every 30 minutes or so, depending on the test/section.

  2. Take 5 minute breaks at the end of every hour. Even just closing your eyes for a few moments will help your brain rest and then be ready to go.

  3. Stretch when you take your breaks. Put your right hand on your left shoulder and your left hand on your right shoulder, and place your chin on your chest. This will stretch your shoulders and help you relax. Roll your shoulders a couple of times to loosen up.

  4. Pack your things the night before. Be organized! Sharpen pencils, pack snacks that are healthy (like grapes, cheese sticks, granola bars), water, and a few books. Eat healthy and get a good night's rest.

  5. When writing your essay, write an outline on your scratch paper. You might not have time for an outline, rough draft and a final copy, but make an outline at least to organize your thoughts. Don't worry about having room or lack thereof, just write and write small. Make sure your grammar and punctuation are correct.

I know STAAR gets super stressful, but take a few breaths! You can do this. Have other advice? Leave it in the comments! We'll have a comment themed T.I.P.S. soon!
