HANGOUT WITH UME STUDENT KAINAN SETH AS HE RELEASES HIS DEBUT ALBUM

Written by Rosemary

UME junior, Kainan Seth, released his first album, The Hangout, on May 12. The overall genre of his music is mainly Hip Hop and R&B. His album contains a total of 14 tracks. In five of his songs, he included guest vocals from some of his colleagues, and worked with them faithfully to create some great sounds, which has definitely paid off. Kainan, along with the work of his friends, has created some wonderful songs that many of the students at UME have begun embracing.

His most popular song among students at UME, Peace of Mind (feat. Hannah Jane), has definitely been a fan favorite. “It makes my heart soar,” says junior Sarah Hall, commenting on her appreciation for his single. Ben Coleman is another student who is very enthusiastic about Kainan’s album, saying, “Kainan manages to talk about issues that are important and topical, while also making songs that are genuinely fun to listen to.”

What the school is now learning, however, is the rest of the album is just as good. “Lyrically,” Kainan says, “it has many themes regarding my Christian beliefs as well as my truths with what I experience as a light-skinned black teen, and as someone from Southern suburbia dealing with the sins I do.” Kainan rated The Hangout PG-13 for mild language and suggestive topics so people would know that the album is for more mature listeners. He would like to ask anyone considering listening to his album to go in with an open mind and an understanding heart.

Kainan would like to thank “God first, since He gave me my gifts and talents, as well as salvation, so I'm eternally grateful for that. My parents for driving me back and forth everywhere as well as the guidance, not in that order. My grandparents, who inspired much of this album with their experiences as black men and women and their wisdom. My close friends Hannah Jane, Cohen McCain, Faolán, Nolan G and Mateo Centeno. They gave me the criticism and advice I needed.“

Winning Streak is the third song on the album and it’s written about Kainan’s family’s past and it gives an insight to the ethnic and socioeconomic challenges they faced when they lived in Louisiana which progressed into his present day life and he details his frustration over the racism that he faces from the black and white community as well.

Kainan sings and raps of the struggles people face in life as they learn and progress over the years. The struggles consist of racism, media defamation, religion and managing everything in a world where people are bigoted.
