Break a leg! It’s time for some theatre competition! UME’s theater class is going to be competing for the first time ever in UIL.

“I think it’s a great way for us actors to practice in front of judges and become better performers!” Grace Jeffries, senior, commented. This class has been preparing since the beginning of January and have worked so hard to get ready for the competition. The class is broken down into two groups of students; one group for competition and the other for a performance that will take place in April 27th and the 28th. Both groups are performing the same play.

The class is taught by Mrs. Kendra Cordero who has worked so hard for the one act plays to go as smooth as possible for both the competition and the performance. They are performing the play “The Curious Savage.” This play is written by John Patrick and is a comedy about an old woman whose husband recently died and left her a huge amount of money. She is joined by a bunch of “great” public leaders and her fellow patients that are living with her in a psychiatric facility.

Perhaps the most memorable quote from the script is, “People say I love you all the time - when they say, ‘take an umbrella, it’s raining,’ or ‘hurry back,’ or even ‘watch out, you’ll break your neck.’ There are hundreds of ways of wording it - you just have to listen for it, my dear.” There are so many great themes and life lessons in this play. We look past the small phrases that mean so much, but never appreciate what is said to us everyday. We don’t appreciate the everyday symbols and companionship. This play shows that once her children knew that she had been left a huge amount of money, they quickly decided it was time to try to rekindle the relationship they had with their mother. Go and watch this play when the theater class performs it in April!
