It Takes More to Lead

Written by Elaine

A team captain is someone who leads the sports team. They are chosen because of their good captainship and attitude toward their teammates. Being a captain is not equivalent to being a coach. A good captain should reach certain expectations.

Team captains show leadership by example.

They are dedicated to the sport and are great examples of commitment, focus, and effort. An exemplary captain has good communication skills within their teammates, as he or she encourages and supports them.

The duties for a team captain include being on time to any team functions, being a positive role model, and encourage and support all teammates, as well as reporting to the head coach about any important problems that need to be fixed. Bethany Hinton, the volleyball team captain, mentions that her responsibilities included “bringing the balls to and from every practice.” She was also “in charge of warm ups and some drills when [the] coach was busy.”

Michigan State University captains mention that in their opinion, “an [effective] captain should embody the three C’s: caring, courageous, and consistent.” Great captains show true concern for each and every one of the teammates. A caring captain respects and considers each group member's ideas and opinions. A courageous captain should “be a model of courage and dedication to the teammates.” They should set goals and show everyone their hard work to achieve them, also trusting and holding accountable the teammates to working hard as well. Being consistent defines itself as acting the same way over time. An effective captain should give their 100 percent in every game and practice. They should also lead by vocal communication and their actions.

In the end, the goal for a team captain is to be an authentic, convincing, and credible leader. Being committed, focused, and showing encouragement in everyone else will have you on the road to being a great captain.
