Open Toe Or Open No?

For years the students at UME Preparatory Academy have lived in fear of wearing opened-toed shoes. These shoes that have been deemed scandalous by the administration truly have no effect on the school day whatsoever. The school student dress code states that absolutely no opened-toed shoes can be worn on campus. This begs the question, what is so distracting about toes?

In a recent poll, 9 out of 10 students agree that toes being out in class actually aren't distracting from the learning process in any way. There really is no negative consequence to wearing opened-toed shoes. The positives truly outweigh the negatives in this shoe debate. As Ethan Minter put it, “Our school often times does not allow us to express ourselves, having opened-toed shoes would allow us a means of expressing ourselves through our shoes and our toes.”

There are many reasons why a dress code is important in a school, however, showing your toes is not inappropriate or a safety hazard. Allowing shoes to be opened toed is a win for both the students and the administration. Students would be allowed some freedoms and be able to express themselves while the administration would get brownie points from the students for being kind and allowing us some freedom.

If the administration can work with the students and get this done, the future of our school will look brighter.
